On Sunday afternoon, we had to take Audrey Layne to the ER because her elbow had dislocated. Of course, we went through a mild freak out stage, but then Eric did some online research and I called her pediatrician's answering service and the nurse-on-call told us what was probably wrong (nursemaids elbow, which is what Eric had diagnosed too!) and that we would need to go to the hospital to have it put back in place. This is a very common injury in children under 5, and the relief is almost instant once it is corrected!
During this time and during the ride in the car, Audrey sat so still and let us hold her, which is not like her at all. She is always moving so we knew something was wrong based on her behavior. Luckily though, one of my college roommates who is a nurse at the ER saw our names and pulled us back pretty quick so we avoided the triage wait, which would have been at least 30 minutes. So thankful for Kimby for the great care she took of our sweet baby!
The bad part was the xrays. I have never had Audrey cry like that in her life, and so of course, I was boo-hoo-ing with her. They had to take 4 xays so we had to move her arm and position it a different way for each one, which hurt her so bad! That was honestly the worst part because the majority of the time until then she had not had to move it much. But shortly after, the doctor came back in our room and said the xrays were fine and he maneuvered her elbow back in place. Of course she cried while he did it, but within sixty seconds, she was smiling and giving high fives with that arm!!
So, for the second time in just a few days, my sweet baby showed us how brave she is! Here she is once we were home and cooking dinner. She has gotten so good at her "CHEEEESSSEEEEE" faces!
LESSONS I HOPE YOU ALL CAN LEARN FROM THIS AS WE HAVE: No pulling or pushing a child's arms, even when pushing up their sleeves or pulling off their jacket/shirts. This is especially including no picking them up by anyplace other than under their arms!
